Welcome to my first-ever Substack! I’m looking forward to exploring the history and development of the All-Girl band with you.

A little background:

This project arose from my research on the forthcoming 33 1/3: Babes in Toyland’s Fontanelle. Babes in Toyland has been my favorite band since I was a pre-teen, and one of the annoying things they faced at their height of fame was the question: “So what’s it like being a girl in a band?” As if that was a newfangled thing in the 1990s. It wasn’t.

Girl bands, or All-Girl bands, or All-Female bands have been in formation since Ancient Egypt, if not earlier. As you can tell from that statement, that’s a lot to bite off and chew in a tiny pocket-sized book like the 33 1/3 series, and a little too broad in scope. But what a fun and fluid topic for something like Substack!

So here we are.

In addition to looking at the female space within music, from ancient Egypt to now, there will be some individual artists who had a huge and perhaps under appreciated affect on music like Sappho (the Greek poetess) and Sapho (the French-Morocan singer who went from Punk to Arabian-new wave pop). These are all figures that I have long adored, or recently discovered, within music while working on my book. I really can’t wait to start sharing it all with you.
